There were six of us who pre-booked VIP Travel Services – North Wales in a Nutshell Tour for our day ashore at the port of Holyhead. We have done a lot of touring in our lives, but this was one of the best ever private car tours that we have ever done. They operate with a truly lovely, luxury, comfortable Mercedes vehicle and were waiting as pre-arranged at the Holyhead terminal when we disembarked the ship. The Best of Anglesey (from Holyhead only) For more information click here Anglesey is known as the mother of Wales (Ynys Môn). The spectacular Llynnon Mill which is the only working windmill in Wales and Anglesey was known as the "Granary of Wales" due to the large quantities of barley and oats once grown here. From here we drive to the centre of the island to Llangefni to view Oriel Ynys Môn, which is a museum and gallery. The museum portrays the history of the island. Our journey continues to historic Beaumaris Castle and then along the coastal road to Menai and the site of one of the first suspension bridges ever built – The Telford Bridge. We stop nearby to take a short walk to the waters edge to view the 6th century church of St Tysilio's on `Church Island. Then it’s onto Plas Newydd the ancestral home of the Marquis of Anglesey and finally, we make a quick visit to probably the most famous place name in the world - Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Medieval Conwy and the scenic Conwy Valley (from Liverpool and Holyhead) For more information click here Here’s a chance to visit one of the best preserved medieval walled town and the world UNESCO site and Castle at Conwy, one of the most famous castles in the world! We also drive through the town to discover Plas Mawr and Aberconwy House and not to mention, the smallest and most intriguing house in Great Britain. There’s also time to explore one of the most beautiful gardens in Britain at Bodnant Gardens and discover the beautiful Conwy Valley with a light lunch at a former medieval riverside courthouse. We drive you across the Isle of Anglesey to view the site of the first iron suspension bridges ever built at a scenic location on the Menai Straits. We stop nearby to take a short walk to the waters edge to view the 6th century church of St Tysilio's on Church Island. From here we cross to the mainland and drive through the countryside and into the hills and Mountains of Snowdonia. We make a short photographic stop at Lake Padarn, Llanberis and then drive the mountain pass to the back of Mount Snowdon. Our next stop is at the unique Ugly House. A short drive to Betws-y-Coed takes us to view the waterfalls and the old church besides the river. We then travel along the scenic Conwy Valley and make a stop for afternoon tea or a light lunch at a beautiful 15th century cottage situated beside the river. From here we drive to the medieval town of Conwy, to view Conwy Castle and the town walls, the Smallest House in Great Britain and Plas Mawr . Our route back to Holyhead takes us over a mountain pass and provides a stunning finale to your day ashore in North Wales. A Taste of Snowdonia (from Holyhead only)
For more information click here We drive you across the Isle of Anglesey to view the stunning Menai Straits with the Snowdonia backdrop. We travel across to the mainland crossing the first iron suspension bridge ever built and we head for Caernarvon, where you board ‘The Welsh Highland Railway’ which starts out beside the awe-inspiring Caernarfon Castle. The train journey snakes around seemingly impossible bends, up hard gradients and around the foothills of Snowdon passing glistening Llyn y Gader en route to Beddgelert. We meet you on the platform at Beddgelert station and take you on a brief walk through the village, which is described as one of the prettiest in all of Wales! During the walk you will learn about the legend of Gelert and see his grave! Our journey continues with a drive to Portmerion, where we follow the river Glaslyn through the dramatic and scenic rocky pass of Aberglaslyn, which has graced more calendars than any other place in Wales. Portmerion is an Italian fantasy village and there’s free time on your own to explore the stunning gardens and village of Portmerion. Llangollen and the Dee Valley (from Liverpool only)
For more information click here There is a spectacular area of North East Wales waiting to be discovered. Just over an hour's drive from Liverpool, our journey takes you across the border into the stunning Welsh countryside and the medieval town of Ruthin. Our journey continues with a spectacular drive along the Horseshoe Pass and a short visit to Valle Crucis Abbey. From here you’ll witness mountains, white water rivers including the spectacular River Dee and a scenic canal, where you can take either a horse drawn boat trip on the beautiful Llangollen Canal or a more spectacular two hour cruise through stunning scenery along the UNESCO World Heritage stretch of the canal, including the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. We can also tailor make a half day cruise on the canal, cruising aboard a private canal boat. Other options can include, The Llangollen Steam Railway featuring a 7 mile track with steam trains that chug along the spectacular Dee Valley. You can visit the historic building of Plas Newydd, home to The Ladies of Llangollen and there are lovely scenic Riverside Walks. For the more energetic a walk to the ruins of the 13th century Castell Dinas offers spectacular views over the Dee Valley. Be warned, it’s on top of a big hill, so good walking shoes are recommended! Depending on your shore time, it is also possible to visit Chirk Castle as part of this tour. |
